AdSense Safety - Select Sites Your AdSense Units Can Be Displayed On

9:25 AM |

Become a guest author on Create the Blogger.

This week I got a strange email from AdSense.To give a summery they told me AdSense had been disabled on one of my sites due to copyright infringement.However the site they say they disabled AdSense on was not mine, in fact I had never seen it before ! This lead to me investigating some more and the results were surprising.

The site AdSense mentioned in the email was indeed using not only my publisher id, they were using the actual units from Create the Blogger.

Why Would Someone Use Your AdSense Code ?

That is naturally the first question, why would someone do this ? The only answer I can come up with is it's a competitor who purposely added it to a site they new was breaking AdSense TOS.In doing this they are trying to get my AdSense account banned (AdSense did not close my account just disabled my ads on the site).You see adding the wrong publisher ID could be done accidentally but adding the actual units is definitely no accident..

Steps To Resolve The Issue

Anyway it was up to me to sort it out.The first thing I did was fill out a form for "I received a policy notification in error" to let AdSense know it was not my site.As with most Google products support I have received no reply but I presume someone read the email.

Next I looked into how I can stop this happening again.This is were i came across a setting I had not seen before namely the "Allowed Sites" setting in "Access and authorization".This setting allows me to pick the sites my AdSense can be displayed on, so I can add the sites I own and no other site will be able to use it.You can access this under Account Settings and scroll to Access and authorization settings.

AdSense Site Authorization

"...Site authorization is an optional feature that lets you authorize specific URLs to use your Google ad code. URLs that you don't include in the list of authorized sites will still show ads and report clicks and page views, but you won't generate earnings from them. Learn more about choosing if this feature is right for you..."

Once you add the URLs to the sites you authorize make sure to check back on your AdSense account regularly for the next few days.Google will continue to track sites with your AdSense code and will display a warning which actually helps a lot.

You see, when someone views your site with for example Google Translate the URL will be a google URL.You will of course want to permit this and they make it easy by following the link in the warning.The sites that are using your code but are not in your 'allowed' list will be shown.

Look below at my Unauthorized sites list below, I was quiet shocked to see 7 sites I have never heard of were using my AdSense code !

This is not something everyone has to do or will want to do but when it comes to AdSense you want to take no chances.I would be very interested in your stories if you use Site Authorization, was your code used on other sites ?

Everything you need to know about "ACTA"

10:01 AM | , , , , , ,

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), is a multinational treaty for the purpose of establishing international standards for intellectual property rights enforcement. The agreement aims to establish an international legal framework for targeting counterfeit goods, generic medicines and copyright infringement on the Internet, and would create a new governing body outside existing forums, such as the World Trade Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, or the United Nations.
The agreement was signed in October 2011 by Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States. In 2012, Mexico, the European Union and 22 countries which are member states of the European Union signed as well. No signatory has ratified (formally approved) the agreement, which would come into force after ratification by six countries. After entry into force, the treaty would only apply in those countries that ratified it.
Supporters have described the agreement as a response to "the increase in global trade of counterfeit goods and pirated copyright protected works". Trades Unions representing workers in the music, film and TV industries  and large intellectual property-based organizations such as the Motion Picture Association of America and Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America were active in the treaty's development.
Opponents say the convention adversely affects fundamental rights including freedom of expression and privacy. ACTA has also been criticised by Doctors Without Borders for endangering access to medicines in developing countries. The secret nature of negotiations has excluded civil society groups, developing countries and the general public from the agreement's negotiation process and it has been described as policy laundering by critics including the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Entertainment Consumers Association.
The signature of the EU and many of its member states resulted in the resignation in protest of the European Parliament's appointed chief investigator, rapporteur Kader Arif, as well as widespread protests across Europe. In 2012 the newly-appointed rapporteur, British MEP David Martin, recommended against the treaty, stating: "The intended benefits of this international agreement are far outweighed by the potential threats to civil liberties". On 4 July 2012, the European Parliament rejected the agreement in plenary session, with 478 voting against the treaty, 39 in favour and 165 MEPs abstaining.

Learn how Facebook keeps track of your activities on the Internet!

7:30 AM | , , , , ,

As we all know that Facebook follows our online activities - even when we give ourselves the information about what we love, who we socialize, where we leave and the like, the company monitors our activities and when we're not on Facebook, or when surfing other websites.

See which of your personal data on Facebook is not protecting

Team from Business Insider decided to check on us the way Zuckerberg and company are monitored, using an Abin DNT + Fejs learn that our activities are monitored by more than 200 so-called. tracker, where each application tracker (among others, cookies) through which the web pages are recorded or shared online activity.

Targeting or spying?

In this way the information is recorded on the user's interests (such information ga interest, purchasing habits, etc.) that advertisers can use to target ads to users placed on things that interest them. At Business Insider says: 'Advertiser companies call this targeting. Critics call it spying. "

Sarah Downey from Abinea reporters BI said that users should pay attention to these trackers who, in addition to damaging their privacy, they are recorded and transferred large amounts of data, which results in slower page load.

She explains that when users access a Web site, their browser communicates with the server, and the page you are on these pages are hidden and different trackers that users will not even know they exist and can not find them without any special software for privacy. Trackers send applications for a variety of information such as geographic location, which pages users visit, the links you click on record and user names from Facebook.

Trackers on the Facebook are linked to Facebook Connect option, or with Facebook button that is located on a very large number of Web sites and via her Facebook sends a special Javascript code that allows you to track and, in some cases, this code can be stored on your computer cookies that new will send new requests for more information.

They will know all Zuckerbergov new blow to privacy?!

Journalists Business Insider have decided, using Abina software, check the way through these trackers Facebook captures and monitors our data and online activity. Once you have cleaned the history of surfing and web browser cache, you first have opened Facebook and they were immediately after logging program showed that the most popular social network has 228 tracker through which monitor their online activities.

Interestingly, in Facebook that I can not speak to what it specifically requests that you send trackers relationships, until we see what those specific requirements in order and in what way are used.

After Facebook, journalists BI opened its own page and posted a message on Facebook - Now tracker number has grown to eight, with a further opening pages and links from Gmail, Twitter, and LinkedIn at the end of trackers has increased to more than 300

After this test, the Business Insider sure what they are all trackers record the information and concluded that Facebook is most interested in articles that we read on the internet that we publish links to social networks and, of course, you buy on the internet. This study once again showed us how Facebook monitors and monitors these social network 'knows' everything you do on the internet and when we're not on Facebook.

AdSense And Other Gadgets Beside Your Blogger Header

8:04 AM | , , , ,

Many blogs now have AdSense Units or other ads and widgets in the header section of the blog.The most popular is the AdSense 468x60 unit beside the header text or image.In this post i will show you how you can also make the most of this space and have the option to place ads or any gadgets beside your header.

The default setting on Blogger is for the header to span the width of the blog and be used for the blog title only but this can easily be changed.The change used splits the header section into two separate sections and you are left with your actual blog title area on the left and you can add gadgets such as AdSense on the right.

To show the effect using a two section header on your blog i added it to a demo blog.You will see i added the popular 468x60 AdSense unit to the blogs header.

This was the layout before the change

And after the change you can see i have a new 'Add A Gadget' area :

To split your blogs header into two sections you need to replace two pieces of code in your blogs html.Although they are two small sections of code any time you replace code you have to be careful and take your time.

First make sure your template is backed up and follow the steps - You can do it !

Split Blogger Header Into Two Sections

Step 1. In your dashboard click 'Layout' > 'Edit Html'

Step 2. Find the following section of code in your blogs Html :
(Click Ctrl and F for a search bar to find the code):

#header {
margin: 5px;
border: 1px solid $bordercolor;
text-align: center;
color:$pagetitlecolor;
}

Note : The easiest way to locate this section is to first find #header and the rest will be below.This section in your template might be slightly different.

Step 3. You must now replace that section with this code :

#header {
float:left;
width:40%;
height:200px;
margin: 0px;
border: 0px solid $bordercolor;
text-align: center;
color:$pagetitlecolor;
}

#header2{float:left;
width:60%;
height:200px}

Note : If you feel comfortable you can change the width and height.

Step 4. Now find this section of code in your template :

<div id='header-wrapper'>
<b:section class='header' id="header' maxwidgets='1' showaddelement='no'>
<b:widget id='Header1' locked='true' title='NAME OF YOUR BLOG WILL BE HERE(Header)' type='Header'>
</b:widget>
</b:section></div>

Note : Once again start by locating <div id="header-wrapper"> and you will see the rest below it.

The part in red will be the actual title of your blog.

Step 5. Replace that section of code with this code :
<div id='header-wrapper'>
<b:section class='header' id='header' maxwidgets='1' showaddelement='no'>
<b:widget id='Header1' locked='true' title='Blog-Title (Header)' type='Header'/>
</b:section>

<b:section class='header' id='header2' maxwidgets='4' showaddelement='yes'/>
<div style='clear:both;'/>
</div><!-- end header-wrapper -->

Note : As shown in red above you must add your blogs title.

Step 6. Once you have made the changes you can save your template and you layout page will now show a two piece header for your AdSense or other gadgets.
