DIY Or Die: Good Blogging Based On Punk Rock Ethics

6:22 AM |

Before the late 1970s, it was nearly impossible for independent musicians to tour and release albums without major label backing. Punk came along and changed all of that in a few different ways. Kids saw that they could, in fact, play music without looking like rock stars or playing like virtuosos. Punk bands also set up concrete DIY models for releasing their own records and setting up their own tours that anyone could follow. The major labels were cut out entirely, and it actually became a case of “you can do this if they put the work in.”

The Internet, in that way, is in those exciting golden years. The infrastructure has been set up and there are several credible models available for reference. There are a staggering amount of resources available to independent bloggers so they can, in fact, do it themselves. That might seem obvious, but it also becomes a valuable thinking point when you start to incorporate the ethics of DIY, independent music into blogging.

Networking, Not Money

After my band played a show the other day, I was sitting around having a beer with another band’s singer while the bar closed up. We were, of course, talking about music. He said something that I knew I already believed—but when he said it, it made an immense impression on me. “Dustin, guys like you and me aren’t playing music to make money or become famous. We do it because we love actually playing music and because we might make some good friends along the way.”

Networking – Bloggers write because, fundamentally, they want their words to be read. In theory, they also want to connect with the people reading those words. They want to talk about what they wrote and why they wrote it. When you begin those conversations, you’ll naturally find some kindred spirits. People let bands sleep on their floors and cook them spaghetti—people comment on your blog and ask you to guest post. You’re making some friends along the way.

A Living – On a small scale, independent level most “career” musicians have a hard time making ends meet. Some of them are even miserable, homeless in between tours and working dead end jobs. “Career” independent bloggers are the same way—just generally without the touring and the homelessness. There are good times to be had in blogging. There is great art to be made. There are new friends to meet. There’s even some money in it—it’s just a hard life to live. If you want to dedicate your life to blogging and make it your primary job, know that there’s a rough road ahead. Dedication is the key. Just as most working stuffs can take a week off go on tour and dedicate some evenings (and sleepless mornings at the office) to play some local shows, know that you can produce great blog content without having to live in your van.

Recognition – There’s a difference between recognition and fame. Famous people make vapid pop hits. Good bands make amazing albums that are recognized by dedicated fans and music lovers. A good blogger strives toward that recognition, but also knows it’s more about the work being understood and appreciated more than it’s about becoming a household name.

Brendan Kelly, front man for The Lawrence Arms, The Falcon and the Wandering Birds sums up the difference between artists seeking some amount of recognition and people who are hungry for fame at any cost, “Frankly, I don’t need to be hanging out with anyone who needs that much attention, and that’s really saying something because I, as well as a lot of my best friends, like to stand on elevated platforms in front of crowds and loudly shout things into amplified microphones. That’s some serious attention seeking behavior, but there’s a difference. Namely, it occupies a time and a place and there’s a certain point where it shuts off.”

The difference between the quest for fame and the quest to be recognized for doing good work is knowing when to shut it off, which is an important bit of knowledge for a good blogger.

Book Your Own Tour

In the 1980s, American punk pioneers Black Flag set up a network of small venues, promoters and housing options for touring bands. Indie bands still follow that network to this day. Likewise, intrepid Internet trailblazers have set up some amazing resources for the independent blogger.

Location – Just as a real indie band does, a good blogger decides where s/he wants his/her content to go. It doesn’t matter what the “pros” and “influencers” say, because as a blogger it is completely up to you. You make your own destiny, and thankfully there are a ton of good maps lying around to guide you to wherever your end destination may be.

Audience – People will tell you “where the money is” and “how to succeed as a blogger.” A good blogger knows, however, that selecting the right audience is imperative. It’s not always about money or the most retweets—it’s about finding the people you actually connect with. Just as Brooklyn indie pop band Hospitality might not go over well at a popular metal club, your content might not be a great fit for every “good” site.

Make Your Own Merch

For DIY bands, it takes a little bit of time and money to get going. They usually spend some cash on their first t-shirts and front the recording bill for their first demo—whether they buy the equipment to do it themselves, or find another local, DIY artist who specializes in those fields to help. Similarly, a good blogger knows that there’s an upfront cost associated with blogging, and that payment can come in the form of either time or money.

Site – There are people out there with good advice, but you should decide what works best for you. Free WordPress and Blogger sits work well for plenty of people, as do bare bones affairs with easy interfaces and inexpensive-but-elegant themes. The people that shout “you must always spend thousands on a web designer!” are full of baloney. Web designers are awesome and do great work, but you’ll know exactly what suits your purposes—which might be a free blog or even just a Tumblr account.

Marketing – Again, there are a ton of marketing professionals and firms out there that can help you get anywhere you want to go, but they’re expensive. If you take the DIY approach you can still make a pretty good run at marketing yourself. There’s plenty of great advice out there, and if you’re a blogger then you’re already a creative person. Who knows—maybe someone will be asking you for marketing advice pretty soon.

The essence of the DIY ethic is this—you make the rules for yourself and put your work out on your terms. No one can tell you where to put your blog posts, what to name your site or who to make friends with. As an independent blogger, you make the choices and put in the work. At the end of the day you might not be raking in cash and writing a regular column for Gawker, but you just might write something innovative that people will actually remember and talk about. Which one sounds better to you?

DIY Earned Media - How To Get Free Publicity For Your Blog

8:28 AM |

Become a guest author on Create the Blogger.

Last year, the Nielsen Company reported 156 million blogs on the Worldwide Web, and Technorati, the blog search reported that bloggers were updating their sites more frequently than in previous years.Blogging is now mainstream, making it more difficult than ever to gain success in this medium. The following are real-world examples of how I garnered favorable publicity for my blog on sites like the Washington Post and MSNBC, and how I even landed a weekly radio commentary on public radio.

In my profession, which is public relations, this is often referred to as earned media. It's earned because unlike advertising you don't pay for it, at least not with cash. You earn it through time, relationships, reciprocity, quality products, ingenuity and creativity.

Make Other People Successful

When I was in my early 20s, literally at the dawn of my career, I worked in military public affairs, and had to attend a conference sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.A colonel was the guest speaker and during his presentation he passed out fortune cookies. My fortune read: "If you want to be successful help others succeed."

I was young and impressionable enough to believe.I never forgot it.I applied it and it has never failed me.

Connect With Mainstream / Traditional Reporters

The theme of my blog is Generation X (1961 to 1981).I write about many subjects including family, career and pop culture within the framework of generations. In 2008, Michael Jackson died and I blogged about it. Just as the death of Elvis was significant for the Silent Generation and even Baby Boomers, I knew Jackson's passing represented a big moment for Gen Xers who'd come of age with Thriller and Billie Jean.

Through Google Alerts, I daily monitored everything written about Generation X.When a national AP reporter wrote about Jackson within the same context I had written about him, I promoted his article on Facebook, Twitter, Stumble Upon and my blog.I loved his story and how it validated so many things I was saying about Gen Xers.Later, the reporter connected with me, and interviewed me for a story that ran on the day of Jackson's funeral. My blog appeared in numerous media outlets including Huffington Post and MSNBC.

Through that reporter, I earned a connection with another reporter who a few weeks later asked to interview me about the death of John Hughes, another icon of Generation X. I was on a roll, earning a link in ParentDish.

Buy An Amazing Camera, Learn To Take Amazing Pictures of Amazing Things

In 2006, I was hired to be the spokesperson and PR Manager for a utility.I needed a camera that would take great pictures of industrial facilities. A local camera shop sold me on a Nikon D60.As they say, the rest is history. I learned to take amazing pictures and eventually bought my own equipment.I learned to transfer all my passion for people - how they feel, think and live - into photos. For the last six years, I've spent a lot of time learning about life through the viewfinder. It's an entirely raw experience -- pure, unprocessed and natural.

St. Patrick's Day Vietnam 1967 Veterans

As I got better, I started to post photos on my blog. One year, I shot pictures of the St. Patrick's Day parade in Oklahoma City and published a post with them.It snagged a link on the San Francisco Chronicle's website.Today, I have three different photo series on my site: Graffiti Wednesday, This Oklahoma Life and the Oklahoma Color Project.

Go Local !

Even though I blog about a very broad and universal subject, generations, a lot of my content has a "personality of place," and that place is Oklahoma City.Over the years, this content began to resonate with a variety of Oklahoma journalists and bloggers. This led to numerous mentions on local sites and helped me grow a secondary audience, Oklahoma City, which is also my largest.

Monitor the Conversation

Two times, my blog has been featured in the Washington Post, once on a blog and once in the actual newspaper.

The first mention was garnered through the PR practice commonly referred to as monitoring. You monitor conversations in social media and then bootstrap fresh content to them.During the Conan O'Brien vs Jay Leno debacle I wrote about the conflict on my blog in the context of generational wars (Generation X vs. Baby Boomers.) Conan sympathizers created a Facebook page to support the Gen Xer, and I posted to it a link to my blog post.A Washington Post reporter saw that link, visited the post and later interviewed me for the article.

The second mention came after two years of blogging consistently and thoughtfully about Generation X.My site was mentioned as a top blog about generations on a Washington Post blog.Quality posts chock full of time-consuming research pay off! They are rewarded with earned media. So, initially, you don't need thousands of people reading your blog. You just need to attract the attention of well-connected people who dig your content.

You Reap What You Sow, But Sometimes, You Must Sow for Decades

After five years of blogging and 2,000 blog posts, a very dear friend of mine who worked in the magazine industry for many years picked up the phone and called someone she knew in public radio. She told him she'd like to introduce him to someone (that would be me) that she thought would be good on radio. As they say, the rest is history.A month ago, I began a weekly commentary on KOSU Radio in Oklahoma City.

What nobody knows, not even my friend, is that over 10 years ago, before I'd even met her, I was a fan of her work as a writer and editor. As the coordinator of a statewide awards program, I had the opportunity to influence her selection for a major award.Only after this, did our paths begin to cross and over time a strong bond of friendship grew.

Now, in a world that undervalues self-publishing, I have an opportunity to have my writing and photography validated through public radio. It makes it a little easier to face the relentless Eyeball-Rolling Brigade. My commentaries relate to cultural life in Oklahoma and my own life experiences as a Gen Xer.After five years and 2,000 blog posts, it's all coming together.
Throughout most of my life I have struggled to come to terms with my own creativity. It requires so much courage to be a writer and maybe even more to take pictures of strangers and the strange things I discover along life's.I hope these tips will help you share your amazing stories with the world. As the writer Brenda Ueland said, "Everyone is interesting and has something important to say."

The Blogging Game: When Blogging Resembles Hunting

3:45 AM |

Become a guest author on Create the Blogger.

The Hunt

Getting Internet users to visit your blog is like sitting at the edge of a clearing in the woods, waiting for the arrival of your target. He comes eventually, stepping on the twigs, shifting, bowing his head for a drink on a little pool of water.

When you finally have a clear view on the target, you quietly and patiently aim your gun, lowering it in an angle, not breathing, careful not to produce even the littlest sound that might startle the creature.

And bam! You missed the deer just near the ear.

Off he runs out of the clearing and beyond the thick woods. He leaves behind not even a cloud of dust, gone as if he had never been in the clearing at the first place. You just stand there, your chest hurting from the recoil.

You are the huntsman, the web developer. The clearing is your site. The gun, your web host provider. The bullet your SEO schemes. The deer, the Internet user.

What happened? How did the deer escape ?

The Bullet

Search engine optimization is one of the most powerful tools in the Internet today. As a metaphor, search engine optimizer is like a pistol cartridge, particularly a .44 Magnum, high-powered and especially designed for hunting.

For now, let us blame the cartridge for missing the deer’s ear. It is not precise. It is faulty. The manufacturer has not been meticulous with the job. It was not designed for catching wild animals.

But it was good. Your SEO is impeccable. Or was it the fault of the gun?

The Gun

The gun here is like web host. The SEO is flawless, but the gun is not. It is rusty, it jambs, it needs oil and maintenance every now and then. It does not deliver well what it had promised.

Some web host providers were designed from the past generations. Some of them may be not compatible anymore with doing the jobs of today. What you need is to upgrade your gun, or get a new one.

The Clearing

The clearing is like your website, the part in the forest where you chose to camp. At the edge, you set up your tent, you build your fire, and you hide behind a rock. You prepare everything for that one-time catch.

But is it really the best spot in the forest? The trees surrounding the clearing are too thick. There are many distractions.Nothing gets in that easily. And if something gets in, it manages to get out fast.

You do not need to change spot. It is a good spot. What you need is baits to lure the creatures and traps to keep them in.

The Huntsman

Or maybe it is the problem of the huntsman. You.

Did you breathe out when you fire the shot? Did your angle change? Did something get in your eyes? Were you nervous?

What we need right now in the search engine optimizers are web developers with more guts and brains. Seeing that there were nodefect in your tools and equipment, and your clearing the most pristine spot in the Internet, you as a huntsman should have alternative strategies when the initial plan falls through.

Invest more in ammunitions, pick your best host, and clean up your sites for obstruction. Nevertheless, remember, however perfect your tools are, if the one who wields them are incapable, these tools are mere child’s playthings.

Buckle up for the kill and be the better hunter that you were once

10 Steps To Targeting Your Blog Readership

6:40 AM |

Become a guest author on Create the Blogger.

You want your readership to grow, and seeing numbers increase is a great sign. That doesn't mean your readership is "everyone."Your content writing needs to be targeted to a specific niche, and these 10 steps will help you find the right readers for your great content.

1. Who would want to read your content?

The answer to this question will help you clarify the target reader of your content writing.

2. Build a detailed picture of who is your ideal reader.

Describe your ideal reader, including as many details as you can (age, gender, occupation, hobbies, number of children, hobbies, etc.).

3. Figure out where that person would hang out online.

Do some online detective work. Visit blogs and discussion forums that would appeal to a person with this profile.

4. Make note of issues that are important to this group.

Over time, you will see certain questions or issues come up repeatedly in forums and in comments on blogs. You can use them to get an idea of what your readership is most interested in and the kinds of problems they want to solve.

5. Read news stories that would be interesting or relevant to your target readership.

Recent news coverage can give you ideas about issues that affect your ideal reader. The stories can also provide you with some helpful background information when you are visiting blogs and online forums.

6. Consider the language the group uses.

If you are going to target your audience appropriately, you need to make a real connection to them. One way you can fit in is to mirror the language they are already using. If you find your target audience is using highly technical writing, you should do the same. In a case where the language is more casual, you will need to keep that in mind when developing your content.

7. Look for elements that are missing in discussions.

Are there topics that should be addressed (or discussed more often) but aren't being covered? Are people visiting forums and asking questions but not finding answers? These missing pieces can give you ideas for the kinds of writing your readers will want to read.

8. Participate in online discussions.

The best way to get to know your target readership is to talk to them. You don't need to explain that you are conducting research or go overboard by participating in every discussion on a particular board. Start slowly by adding thoughtful comments that will move the discussion forward, then start asking some questions to generate new discussions.

9. Share some writing and monitor the results.

At a certain point, you need to start generating content to share with readers. Good quality content is going to attract readers, and you will want to be sure that everything you share gives some value to the reader. Avoid fluff at all costs and watch your traffic numbers to see which posts generate the most traffic and comments. These statistics can give you valuable clues about targeting your readership. Internet users will vote with their clicks, and you will be able to see patterns emerge for certain types of posts over time.

10. Ask your readers what they are interested in reading about.

Conducting a survey is an effective way to keep your finger on the pulse of your readership. To encourage people to participate, consider entering each respondent's name in a draw for a free gift. Include a list of topics the respondent can check off but include a section where respondents can make suggestions as well. Use the answers to target your content to what your readers want.

How To Use Facebook To Boost Blog Traffic And Sales

5:17 PM | , ,

Become a guest author on Create the Blogger.

Is investing time and money on Facebook really going to help increase your traffic and sales?

Or is Facebook as a social media marketing leader overrated?

I’m sure these were some of the questions that had come across your mind before, regardless of whether you have used Facebook as a social media marketing platform or not.

Is the ROI really worth the effort we put into Facebook?

Why Facebook Marketing ?

Let’s look at some interesting facts about Facebook as a social media marketing tool.

(1) On Oct 2012, Facebook has reached 1 billion active members. Granted that some of these accounts may be inactive or non-human (eg businesses and pets) or duplicate (with one person having multiple accounts)… still, the number is overwhelming.

(2) More than 50% of its users log on everyday.

(3) The average user spends more than 20 minutes on Facebook daily.

(4) 2 major reasons why users “like” a Facebook brand is because they genuinely like the brand and because they wanted the promotional items or services.

(5) Majority of the brands which used Facebook as a marketing tool, had reported a significant increase in referral traffic and revenue.

And of course…
(6) Facebook is the most popular social media choice ahead of Twitter and LinkedIn.

I’m Convinced. But How Do I Unleash Facebook’s Potential?

There are a few simple ways you can make use of Facebook to give your website a traffic boost or your business’ bottom line a nice improvement. Here’s a list of some of methods that you can implement for your brand.

#1: Network Building
Why many take advantage of Facebook marketing or any social media marketing, is the fact that it easily allows you to build your network. It is essentially your basics for using Facebook as a marketing tool for your blog or business. So, invite all your acquaintances and your customers.
In addition to that, you can also start a group and invite those interested in the same topic or your business to join it. The best part this method offers is it’s free and it’s targeted.

#2: Introduce Yourself to Your Friends and Fans
One of the golden rules of using social media as a marketing tool is to introduce yourself, your blog and your business, whichever relevant. You don’t have to disclose too much personal information if you are not comfortable in doing so but instead, work on building an interesting profile, be it your passion (in what you blog) or your products / services.
People read blogs that they are acquainted with and buy from businesses which they are familiar with. As for the latter, you might even get away with a slightly higher price compared to your competitors. I know for I have seen it happened.

#3: Engage Your Friends and Fans
After all, Facebook is all about social interaction. What’s a better way to interact with your readers and customers than to answer or address their comments, concerns or thoughts?

This does not mean that you need to be on standby on your Facebook account all the while waiting for these comments. I’m pretty sure your readers and customers won’t mind waiting a bit for your answers. However, it is common sense that when you have an active promotion, you should be expecting more comments. The faster you address their queries, the higher your chances are of increasing your traffic and sales, as the promotions are still fresh on their minds.

#4: Upload Images and Videos
Another engaging activity that you are recommended to do is to upload images and videos. It can be pictures related to your post or a video on how to use your products. This proves to be a rather effective way as it stands out among other text posts and updates. Add an interesting caption and you are set to draw in more attention and hence, generate traffic, “likes” and subsequently sales too.

#5: Don’t Spam
Nobody likes a spammer. So, while you are anxious to see the results from promoting your brand on Facebook, you need to refrain from spamming, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Updating every 10 minutes or posting dozens of posts daily are considered spamming as your friends and fans’ accounts will be filled with your posts and updates to the point that it becomes irritating. When that happens, you are most likely to be blocked from their account.

Having said that, don’t wait till the following month before you post something! You probably have your friends and fans forgetting about your brand.

#6: Apps for Your Facebook Marketing

Check out the following apps and see if you can make use of it in your Facebook account.

ContactMe (http://www.facebook.com/contactforms) – this allows you to add a contact form to your Facebook page. It’s easy to use and be customized.

Ecwid (http://www.ecwid.com/) - this shopping cart is especially for those running a business on Facebook. It is web and mobile optimized which is great, judging by the amount of people assessing their Facebook accounts through mobile devices. It can be integrated with online and offline payment methods like Paypal & Google Wallet and shipping carriers like UPS & FedEx. There are two packages available ie Basic which is free and Silver which has more features and costs $17 per month.

PostPlanner (http://www.postplanner.com/) -this premium app is simple yet effective. It helps you schedule your posts (including images and video, which is not commonly offered by other scheduling apps) to your Facebook page and groups. Great for when you are away from the computer for an extended period or when you want to ensure that your posts be delivered at certain time egduring peak time. Packages start from $4.95 per month.

There you are, some of the simpler and effective ways to give your traffic and sales a boost. I do hope you find them useful. Do you have any other tips on how to do so too? Do share. I would love to read about them.

How Facebook Can Turn Your Blog Into An Overnight Success

Become a guest author on Create the Blogger.

Having your blog and blog posts shared on social networks and social bookmarking websites is kinda like getting free advertising. If the right people share your blog it can have a viral effect and could lead to lots of new visitors, members and subscribers.Think of a video one of your friends (We will call him John) added to their wall, you see it on your Facebook homepage and click the like icon below. Now all your friends also get to see the video on their homepage even though they are not friends with John. When one of them also clicks the like icon all their friends also get to see the video and they don't know John or you !.

This is a very realistic ripple effect that happens to thousands of blog posts, videos, links and pictures on Facebook every day.All you have to do is get the ball rolling and have a little luck.I'm afraid i cant help you with the luck but their are steps you can take to get the ball rolling. The first and most important thing you can do is make it as easy as possible for people to share your blog on Facebook.

Share The Love - I personally share a lot of content on Facebook and Twitter, We all like to share a funny article, Picture or video with friends. In fact i share the latest post from one of my favorite Funny Stuff blogs called Oddee every single day. It's possible that i have sent thousands of people to Oddee just by clicking a Like Button.I'm happy sharing funny content with my friends and Oddee are trilled to be getting the traffic.

Oddee like all the top blogs and websites make it as easy as possible for you to share their content. They have links to all the top networking and bookmarking sites at the top and bottom of every post.On the top Tech blog Mashable you can not scroll to any part of the page that does not contain a social icon of some description, they almost over do it (Note - Just had a quick look and the latest post on Mashable has been Tweeted 1339 times and shared on Facebook 258 times - guess it works).

I can say without any doubt that on not even one occasion have i gone looking for a button to share a post or link.In the same vein i never think half way through reading a post "I think i will share this on Twitter".Sharing a post, image or video is an off the cuff decision we make when presented with the options at the end.In fact, silly as it may seem, it's proven that when there is a message at the foot of a blog post with something like "Please Leave A Comment" more people tend to leave a comment.Yes we are like trained dogs when we browse the Internet.

Social Networking V's Social Bookmarking - I'm not a huge believer in the power of Bookmarking sites like Digg and Stumble Upon, but i do believe Facebook can have a huge impact. In fact i believe Facebook alone could turn a blog into a success overnight. The people that hang out on Digg, Stumble Upon, Reddit and the rest are experienced Internet users, how many people go online for the first time and open an account on Digg ? How many would even know what Digg or social bookmarking is all about ? But even your Gran has heard of Facebook.

So whats wrong with experienced Internet users?

Well on the face of it nothing at all but new or casual Internet users offer much more.

Experienced users scan content and move on quickly they've seen it all before.

Experienced users are already subscribed to too many Rss Feeds and Newsletters so you gotta be special to entice them.

Experienced users have trained themselves to not even see AdSense and other ads (I recon it's a few years since i last clicked on an AdSense ad).

Experienced users are sceptics, before they even start they have the opinion most sites are garbage so you have to prove different and you don't have long.

The new or casual Internet user has no such preconceptions. They are open minded and looking to be informed. You have the chance to make a first impression and just a little effort could see you pick up a life long fan.And Facebook is full of millions of these new users just crying out for a blog they can visit to pass half an hour.Even if your blog is on a subject as obscure as multi colored socks you can be sure there are people with similar interests to be found on Facebook.

From Myspace To Facebook - Being a long time Blogger from the time when Myspace and Bebo controlled the budding social networking landscape i am still struggling to get on board the social bandwagon.Bands and girls on web cams (Not putting both in the same category) were the only people using Myspace to promote.Posting a link to your blog on the Myspace homepage was almost seen as spam, people still have to click a second link on a page warning them your blog could be a phishing website looking to steal their identity!

Create the Blogger however is a blog for experienced Internet users, not many new or casual Internet users keep a blog or would know how to.So i have been climbing the social bandwagon with some of my other blogs and the overwhelming evidence is Facebook has the most traffic to offer. On a Guitar based blog i write i was able to turn almost zero traffic from Facebook to Facebook actually providing 25% of total traffic in one month ! Stats that defiantly opened my eyes, also that blog gets similar visitor numbers as Create the Blogger yet it earns 3 times more revenue.

Helping You Get On The Social Bandwagon - So that's my case for really targeting Facebook to promote your blog.In the next two posts i will show you steps you can take to get people sharing your content and also how to set up a professional looking Facebook fan page.
